Mindfulness

A word we see and use a lot nowadays.  The official meaning: ‘the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something’ and ‘a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique’.  So basically, it’s saying being aware.  That seems to be the common denominator in these definitions.

As a species, we’ve managed to get just about as far from being ‘mindful’ as you possibly can!  We’re so wrapped up in being busy, getting things done, fitting in as much as the hours in one day will allow, as if doing so somehow deserves a medal!  I’m including myself in this, by the way.  It wasn’t until my menopause that I realised I’d been burnt out for probably years and, as always, that period in a woman’s life highlights just how bad things can be, forces your arm.

So I began learning to slow up (or is it down?), step back, and breathe, allowing myself to take in my surroundings, stop being in such a hurry, and help my body find its balance once more.  It didn’t happen overnight, and I had to first convince myself I deserved it, rather than feeling guilty for wanting to do and be less.  And I’ve seen so many of my lovely friends going through the same motions, but the other side is always sunnier!  And interestingly, these ‘friends’ are the very people that came into my life when I was ready to make changes, thank goodness for them.

Here are a few lovely tips to try to persuade you to nurture yourself (courtesy of TROPIC SKINCARE LTD):

1 – Listening to your favourite song can reduce your stress levels by up to 65%!

2 – Take time to do the things you know will make you laugh; put a smile on your face.

3 – A cuddle with a furry friend is proven to have mood-boosting effects.

4 – Choose products that you think smell amazing and treat yourself to some pampering.

5 – A good night’s sleep can help you feel happy, positive and more productive.

6 – Five minutes of exercise can immediately lower your stress levels.

It’s not rocket science, is it?
